Elizabeth Taylor and Her Four Tiny Co-Stars

When Rock N’ Rescue arrived at our hospital carrying a worn cardboard box, we had no idea just how much personality was packed inside.

Inside the box was a frightened young mama cat — skinny, exhausted, flea-ridden, carrying the unmistakable smell of skunk spray — curled tightly around her four tiny kittens. She had clearly been doing everything she could to protect them, despite having very little herself.

Rock N’ Rescue brought them straight to us for care, and over the past month, this little family quietly became part of ours.

At first, mom wanted absolutely nothing to do with us. She was scared, defensive, and unsure if humans could be trusted. Understandably so. But slowly, day by day, things changed.

Momma and her kittens at 8 weeks. She had regained much of her fur, weight, and strength. We kept the original cardboard box inside her enclosure because, until she met Rock N’ Rescue, it was the only place she had ever truly felt safe.

We treated her fleas, helped resolve her diarrhea, cleaned her up, and most importantly, helped her regain weight and strength. Eventually, the skunk smell disappeared too — though we’ll admit, the memory of it lingered for a while.

And somewhere along the way, she started to trust us.

First it was allowing us near the kittens. Then allowing treatments. Then accepting gentle pets. Eventually, she’d greet staff with soft chirps and cautious head bumps, proudly watching over her babies from her cozy hospital setup.

Her name? Elizabeth Taylor — glamorous, dramatic, resilient, and absolutely deserving of star treatment.

Naturally, her kittens needed equally iconic names.

Eddie

Curious orange-and-white rescue kitten named Eddie exploring the veterinary hospital during foster care at Healing Paws Veterinary Center.

The fearless explorer. Eddie was always the first one out of the pile, first to climb into someone’s lap, and first to investigate absolutely everything he shouldn’t. If there was a shoelace, pen cap, or stethoscope nearby, Eddie claimed it immediately.

Richard

Named after Richard Burton — Elizabeth Taylor’s famously passionate on-again, off-again love story counterpart. Richard is the charmer of the group: soulful eyes, loud purr motor, and a habit of dramatically flopping over for belly rubs whenever he wanted attention.

Conrad

Brown and white tabby rescue kitten named Conrad sitting quietly and observing the veterinary hospital at Healing Paws Veterinary Center.

The thoughtful observer. While the others caused chaos, Conrad liked to sit back and study the room before joining in. Quietly affectionate, he became everyone’s favorite shoulder kitten and had a talent for falling asleep mid-play.

Liza

Tiny but mighty. Liza quickly established herself as the queen of the litter. She was brave, opinionated, endlessly curious, and somehow always managed to steal the warmest sleeping spot in the room.

Throughout their stay, this little family became part of daily hospital life.

During the week, our team cared for them between appointments, treatments, and surgeries. On weekends, Dr. Lindsey Thomas and Dr. Valerie Carril would bring their families into the hospital to help socialize the kittens, teach gentle handling, and help their children learn about caring for vulnerable animals and nursing mothers.

“It became something more than medical care. It became trust-building, patience, compassion, and honestly, a reminder of why so many of us chose veterinary medicine in the first place. Watching her slowly relax enough to let people hold her babies felt like one of those quiet victories that stays with you.

Just a month ago, this little family arrived frightened, flea-ridden, underweight, and hiding together inside a cardboard box. Today, they’re healthy, playful, clean, loved, and unbelievably.

And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
